RELATED BACKGROUND
Ducks Unlimited Canada | Wetland conservation
Ducks Unlimited is a $120-million-a-year conservation charity with 6.5 million acres under its care in Canada. I collaborated with biologists, fundraisers, donors, researchers, landowners and beyond to gather exciting, purposeful stories that celebrate conservation.
As national content specialist (2022 to 2024), I developed content for multiple channels to engage the public, donors and funders, governments, commercial sectors, and more. Examples include:
- Email journeys for supporter segments
- Articles that blend policy and science (The Biodiversity Lens)
- Educational websites (What is a Salt Marsh?)
- Spotlight maps to celebrate wins (A Healthy Continent Starts Here)
- Campaigns for public education (When The Forces of Nature Are The Answer To Nature’s Force/Weather Network and Waterways of Life/Water Canada)
As communications specialist (2018-2022), I worked in public relations and outreach supporting operational and policy goals for wetland conservation. Examples include:
- Interactive maps for wetland-goers (Footsteps in a Winter Wetland)
- Eye-catching social series (Steal This Look/Top Instagram Series for DUC)
- Soft recruitment of landowners (Fields to Forks Campaign/Bell Media)
- Landowner information portals (Wetlands at Work For You/Landowner’s Guide)
- Program recognition (Wetlands Conservation Partner Program/Government of Ontario)
Creemore Communications | Professional services
As a writer and marketing consultant (2012 to 2022 in Creemore, Ont.), I helped private clients with marketing and communications strategies, staying nimble to navigate destination marketing, grant-writing, reports and proposals, manuscript development, and community engagement.
Environment & Climate Change Canada | Policy and management
This federal department is responsible for prediction, management and protection of nature, wildlife and renewable resources under its jurisdiction. I worked with field staff, researchers, analysts and external partners to drive knowledge transfer, public education and community outreach.
As senior science liaison (2006 to 2012 in Burlington, Ont.), I helped researchers and field-based staff connect their work to “science clients” in government, industry, academia and non-profits. Examples include media relations, program/staff profiles, and a digital subscription we developed to provide custom research and report summaries. Awards received:
- Citation of Excellence, Outstanding Innovation Connecting People to Science, 2013
- Outstanding Performance, 2010
As a Canadian Wildlife Service section head (2001 to 2006 in Downsview, Ont.), I oversaw programs in environmental education, public outreach and regulatory compliance, as well as internal communications and publication management.
